1904 Detroit Tigers Large-Format Team Photo
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $470
Vintage large-format original press photo, culled from The Detroit News archives, capturing the 1904 Detroit Tigers in a professional studio setting. Seventeen team members are pictured dressed in formal attire, including manager Ed Barrow, Sam Crawford, George Mullin, Matty McIntyre, and Bill Donovan. Team photos from this era are rare, and this example is also noteworthy for its unusually large size, measuring 13.5 x 8.625 inches. Reverse markings include three date stamps ("June 12 1904," "June 12 1906," and "April 14 1933"), various period handwritten editorial notations, and a typed caption reading "Detroit base ball club of 1904, the first year Frank J. Navin was connected with it." All of the players are identified in type below the caption. Frank Navin was the Tigers longtime president (1904-1935) and architect of the team's 1907-1909 dynasty. This photo was most likely taken very early in the season, as it does not include Bobby Lowe. Lowe played only one game for Pittsburgh before being traded to Detroit on April 30th. Lowe not only started at second base for Detroit for the remainder of the season, but also took over the managerial reins from Ed Barrow after seventy-eight games. The photo has a number of minor flaws common to nearly all working press photos, including chips in the upper and lower left corners, a small edge tear, a few light surface creases, and editorial shading. Very Good condition overall. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $470
