1920s Detroit Tigers Team Photos (3)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $470

Three exceptional vintage press team photos, culled from The Detroit News archives, each picturing the Detroit Tigers, including Ty Cobb, during the 1920s. 1) 1922 Detroit Tigers. Traditional team pose in a formal studio setting picturing twenty-seven team members in street clothes, including Ty Cobb, Frank Navin (team president), Harry Heilmann, and Bobby Veach. Reverse markings included the handwritten year "9-5-22," a "Sep 19 1940" date stamp, and editorial notations. Also affixed to the reverse is a paper caption, titled "Detroit Tigers 1922" that identifies each player by name. 2) 1924 Detroit Tigers. Traditional team pose picturing twenty-eight team members in their home uniforms (many wearing team sweaters), including Ty Cobb, Heinie Manush, Harry Heilmann, and Charley Gehringer (first season in the Majors). The year ("1924") is both typewritten and noted in pencil on the reverse. Reverse markings also include a "Feb 21 1939" date stamp, editorial notations, and typewritten identifications for each player. 3) 1925 Detroit Tigers. Traditional team pose picturing fourteen team members in their home uniforms, including Ty Cobb, Earl Whitehill, John Bassler, and Dutch Leonard. Although the photo is not trimmed, the image appears to be a segment of a larger shot picturing the whole team. Reverse markings included handwritten identifications of the players, as well as the date "March 2, 1925." All of the photos (each measuring 10 x 8 inches) have a number of very minor flaws common to nearly all working press photos, including a few very light creases, small tears (the 1924 and 1925 photos each display a small tape repair on the reverse), and editorial marks on the front. Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $470
