1980 Mike Schmidt Signed Pro-Model Bat - MVP and World Championship Season
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,998
Mike Schmidt Adirondack signature-model "170A" bat dating from his 1980 MVP season. Graded GU9 by PSA/DNA. The red-ring bat features Schmidt's uniform number ("20") written on the knob in faded black marker. Medium use is displayed in the form of ball and stitch marks on the left side of the barrel, cleat marks, rack marks, and pine tar. A crack in the handle (indeterminate length) has been professionally restored and is no longer visible. The model number ("170A"), year code ("0"), and batch code ("370") are stamped on the knob. The bat's original weight ("33 oz"), which is written in pencil, also appears on the knob. Schmidt has signed the bat in black marker (grading "9/10") on the sweet spot. Schmidt enjoyed one of the finest seasons of his career in 1980, batting .286 while recording both career-high and league-leading totals in home runs (48) and RBI (121). Those lofty numbers not only helped lead the Phillies to their first World Championship in franchise history, but also earned Schmidt his first of an eventual three MVP Awards at season's end. Mike Schmidt is considered by many to be the greatest third baseman in baseball history. A member of baseball's elite 500 Home Run Club, Schmidt led the National League in home runs on eight separate occasions and was the recipient of three MVP Awards, including back-to-back honors in 1980 and 1981. Equally adept in the field, Schmidt received ten Gold Glove Awards over the course of his eighteen-year career, with that total second only to Brooks Robinson for third baseman. Schmidt was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1995, his first year of eligibility, and in 1999 was named to Major League Baseball' s All-Century Team. This is an exceptional Mike Schmidt bat in all respects, especially given its precise dating to the most memorable season of his legendary career. Length: 35 inches. Weight: 31.6 ounces. Graded GU9 by PSA/DNA. LOAs from John Taube and Vince Malta of PSA/DNA and James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $1,998
