1961 Solly Hemus St. Louis Cardinals Game-Used Home Jersey
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,763
St. Louis Cardinals home jersey worn by manager Solly Hemus in 1961. Graded a perfect A10 by MEARS. The white flannel jersey features the team name "Cardinals" embroidered on the front, above which is displayed the club's distinctive logo of two cardinals perched upon a bat. The number “7" is appliquéd on the reverse in red on blue felt. Both the player's name and date ("Hemus 61") are chain-stitched in red on the left front tail, directly above which is a "Rawlings 42" label. Located on the interior left front tail are a laundry tag and a flag tag reading "Set 1 1961." The jersey is completely original, with no alterations, and displays light wear. The light wear is not surprising given the fact that Hemus only managed the club for seventy-four games in 1961 before being replaced by Johnny Keane. Hemus, who had been a solid infielder with the Cardinals during the early to mid 1950s, took over as manager of the Cardinals in 1959 and served in that capacity through the first seventy-four games of 1961. He later coached with both the Mets and Indians before retiring in 1965. Graded A10 by MEARS. This is the only Solly Hemus jersey, and the only 1961 St. Louis Cardinals jersey, home or away, listed in the MEARS census. As such, it represents both a rare and exceptionally high grade "style" jersey from the early 1960s. LOA from Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,763
