LOT WITHDRAWN: Circa 1922-1923 St. Louis Cardinals Game-Used Road Jersey - Earliest Graded Example!

Starting Bid - $0, Sold For -

This lot has been withdrawn from the auction due to a potential error in identification. We are conducting additional research and the jersey may appear in a future auction.

Extremely rare St. Louis Cardinals "style" jersey (no player identification) dating from the early 1920s (1922-1923). Graded A6 by MEARS. This jersey holds the distinction of being the earliest St. Louis Cardinals jersey ever evaluated by MEARS and is one of only five 1920s-era Cardinals jerseys listed in the company's census. The gray flannel jersey features the team name "Cardinals" embroidered in red on the front, above which is displayed the club's distinctive logo of two cardinals perched upon a bat. A "Rawlings" manufacturing tag appears in the collar. While the manufacturer's tag found here was used by Rawlings from the early 1920s through 1938, the year of the jersey can be precisely dated to the year 1922 or 1923 based upon its unique design and style (collar, front logo, solid vs. pinstripe body, etc.). The jersey is completely original, with no alterations, and displays light use, including a red stain on the front (in the area of the Cardinal logo, most likely bleeding from the red embroidery), and minor fading to the red soutache around the collar. Graded A6 by MEARS (base grade of 10, with 2 points deducted for the fact that it cannot be attributed to one specific player, 1 point deducted for the stain, and an additional 1 point deducted for the light use). Major League baseball jerseys dating from the 1920s are extremely rare. As a point of reference, this is one of only seventeen jerseys from that historic decade ever graded by MEARS, with only two others conclusively dating earlier (many jerseys in the census, like this example, are dated by a range of years and therefore overlap; the date of the offered jersey overlaps with those of two others). While we will never know, this jersey may possibly have been worn by the great Rogers Hornsby, "Sunny" Jim Bottomley, Jesse Haines, or manager Branch Rickey, all of whom were with the Cardinals in 1922 and 1923. Its player identification notwithstanding, this remains an exceptional example of one of the oldest St. Louis Cardinals jerseys extant. LOA from Troy Kinunen and Dave Grob/MEARS. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000+.
