1928 Babe Ruth Signed Photo To Jimmie Donohue

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,525

Outstanding professional studio photograph of Babe Ruth, dressed in formal attire, inscribed in black fountain pen along the bottom right border: "To the one and only Jimmie/Sincerely 'Babe' Ruth/Feb 7th 1928." Both the inscription and signature are boldly penned and grade "9" overall. A Piaz Studio of Paris photographer's credit stamp appears in the lower left corner (partially obscured by the matting). The recipient of this photo was Jimmie Donohue, a prominent New Jersey restauranteur who was a longtime friend and confidant of Ruth. This photo was one of numerous Ruth signed items presented to Donohue over the years, almost all of which were prominently displayed in Donahue's restaurant, and which were in recent years sold by the Donohue family at public auction. Ruth was probably the most recognizable person in America at the time of this photo, having just completed the greatest season of his illustrious career. Ruth smacked a record sixty home runs in 1927, leading the Yankees to the first of two consecutive World Championships. Following the season, he and Lou Gehrig toured the country in the now famous "Bustin' Babes and Larrupin' Lou's" barnstorming tour, which gave fans in cities without Major League baseball the opportunity to see the two sports idols in person. The photo, which measures 6.25 x 8.5 inches, is in apparent Near Mint condition and has been matted and framed to total dimensions of 12.75 x 15.75 inches. The wood frame is original to the piece. It is interesting to note that close examination of the frame reveals mounting impressions (one in the middle of the top border of the frame and one in the middle of the bottom border) that are exactly consistent with what one would expect to find on a frame that was mounted to the wall of a restaurant. This is a spectacular signed Ruth photograph with an ideal and extraordinary provenance! LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+.
