Early Turn-of-the-Century Boston Red Sox and Braves Program Collection (3)

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,528

This collection of three programs is comprised of two for the 1904 Boston Red Sox and one for the 1910 Boston Braves. 1-2) Two identical 1904 Boston Red Sox programs, with the exception of the interior scorecard. The cover of each eight-page program features a portrait image of player/manager Jimmy Collins and an illustrated caricature of Mike "Nuff Ced" McGreevy, leader of the fabled "Royal Rooters." The illustration of McGreevy was used in conjunction with an advertisement for his 3rd Base Tavern that simply reads "3rd Base Nuf Ced!" It is also interesting to note that displayed among the interior pages are both a full-page Carl Horner photo composite of the 1904 Boston Americans team and a full-page advertisement for the famed Carl Horner Studio featuring a spectacular 1903 photo composite of all the members of the American League. Both programs have been neatly scored in pencil. The first commemorates a 12-5 Boston victory against the Washington Senators on September 5th, while the second commemorates a 6-4 Boston loss at the hands of the White Sox on July 30th. The preprinted Boston lineups in each program include Collins, Parent, C. Stahl, and Selbach. The preprinted lineup for Washington includes O'Neil, J. Stahl, Hill, and Huelsman; for Chicago: Jones, Callahan, Davis, and Walsh. Both programs (5.25 x 7.75 inches) display a horizontal center fold; otherwise each is in Excellent condition. 3) 1909 edition of The Baseball Record, a daily baseball program published by The Baseball Magazine Co., for distribution in the Boston area. As noted on the cover, The Baseball Record contained the only official scorecard, printed daily, for both the Boston Red Sox and Braves, as well as a number of local minor league clubs. The substantial program features a number of informative baseball articles, including a short biography of Charles Comiskey, as well as various advertisements. The interior scorecard has been neatly scored in pencil and commemorates a 7-4 victory by the Boston Braves over the New York Giants on July 28th. The preprinted lineups include Mathewson, Tenney, Doyle, Devlin, and McCormick for New York, and Thomas, Becker, Coffey, and Beck for Boston. It appears that twenty-seven of the original fifty-eight pages have been removed from the program, which also displays a vertical center fold. Without reference to the missing pages, the program (6.5 x 9.5 inches) is in overall Very Good to Excellent condition and displays well. Total: 3 programs. Reserve $400. Estimate $800+.
