1903 New York Giants (vs. St. Louis) Program

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $2,350

Extremely rare and exceptional 1903 New York Giants regular-season program featuring a portrait image of manager John McGraw on the cover. In addition to McGraw, the program also features photos of both Christy Mathewson and Roger Bresnahan on the interior in promotion, respectively, of Heublein's Club Cocktails and the Metropolitan Equipment Company. All Major League programs dating from the turn of the century are rare, and few are as extraordinary and ideal for display as this example. This particular program was issued for a game against the St. Louis Cardinals and the interior preprinted scorecard pages include Patsy Donovan, Homer Smoot, and Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown (his rookie season; one of two pitchers listed) for St. Louis, and Roger Bresnahan, George Van Haltren, and both Christy Mathewson, and Joe McGinnity (two pitchers are listed for each club) for New York. The game has been neatly scored in pencil and records a 4-3 win by St. Louis. Although the scorecard is not dated, research indicates that the only 4-3 home loss by the Giants to St. Louis in 1903 occurred on May 23rd. 1903 marked McGraw's first full season as manager of the Giants and under his stewardship the Giants captured ten pennants and three World Championships over the next twenty-nine seasons. The eight-page program displays a very light vertical center fold, as well as a few minor surface wrinkles on the cover (each of no consequence); in Excellent condition overall. This is an extremely rare (it is the first example we have ever seen), striking, and historically significant Giants program commemorating John McGraw's first full season as manager. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $2,350
