1888 Cincinnati Baseball "Accordion Style" Scorecard Collection (4)

Starting Bid - $800, Sold For - $2,644

Collection of four 1888 Cincinnati American Association programs, each featuring an illustrated portrait of a Cincinnati player on the cover. Programs from this series have always been appreciated not just as rare early programs, but for their exceptional design and great display value. Each of the eight-sided fold-over scorecards (3.75 x 6.25 inches, folded) opens up "accordion style" to reveal four panels. The two interior center panels each feature the preprinted lineup for a team, while the other panels display advertising. All were published by Fennessy & Renau. 1) Scorecard for a game against the Kansas City Cowboys. A portrait of Cincinnati catcher James Keenan is featured on the cover. The preprinted lineups include Davis, McTamany, and Barkley for Kansas City, and McPhee, Reilly, Baldwin and Nicol for Cincinnati. The scorecard, which has not been scored, displays a small diagonal edge tear at the bottom of one of the interior panels (of no consequence and mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy) and is otherwise in Excellent condition. 2) Scorecard for a game against the St. Louis Browns (league champions in 1888). A portrait of Cincinnati shortstop Heinie Kappel appears on the cover. The preprinted lineups include Comiskey, O'Neill, Latham, and King for St. Louis, and McPhee, Reilly, Baldwin, Mullane, and Nicol for Cincinnati. The scorecard, which has not been scored, displays a small half-inch diagonal tear to one of the interior panels and is in Excellent condition. 3) Scorecard for a game against the St. Louis Browns (league champions in 1888). A portrait of Cincinnati pitcher Bill Serad appears on the cover. The preprinted lineups include Comiskey, O'Neill, Latham, and King for St. Louis, and McPhee, Reilly, Baldwin, Mullane, and Nicol for Cincinnati. The scorecard, which has not been scored, is in Excellent to Mint condition. 4) Scorecard for a game against the Cleveland Blues. A portrait of Cincinnati catcher Clarence Baldwin appears on the cover. The preprinted lineups include Zimmer, McKean, Faatz, and Hotaling for Cleveland, and McPhee, Reilly, Mullane, and Nicol for Cincinnati. The scorecard has been neatly scored in pencil and records a 3-0 win for Cleveland. Research indicates that the only 3-0 home loss for Cincinnati against Cleveland in 1888 occurred on August 22nd. In Excellent to Mint condition. Total: 4 scorecards. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500++.
