1886 Cincinnati (vs. St. Louis) American Association Scorecard
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,293
Few scorecards from any era are as stunning as this incredibly impressive rare gem featuring star pitcher Tony Mullane on the cover. This fold-over scorecard commemorates an American Association game between the Cincinnati Red Stockings and St. Louis Browns at League Park in Cincinnati on May 14, 1886 (date preprinted on the back cover). The ornately designed front cover, as previously noted, features a portrait of Cincinnati pitcher Tony Mullane, known as “The Apollo of the Box," while the back cover provides the current league standings. The preprinted lineups include Comiskey and O’Neil for St. Louis (the eventual League champions) and McPhee, Mullane, and Fennelly for Cincinnati. The scorecard is neatly scored in pencil and records a 2-1 win by St. Louis. The fact that the date is preprinted and current up-to-the-minute standings are printed on the reverse are both very unusual for programs, and suggest a very small custom print run that is consistent with the extreme rarity of programs from this series. The scorecard (4 x 6 inches) displays corner wear, and is otherwise in Excellent condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+.
