Circa 1887 Wright & Ditson Professional-Model Bat

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,410

Extremely rare professional model Wright & Ditson baseball bat dating from the late 1880s. Hand-turned, with lathe marks on both ends, measuring a full 36 inches and weighing 34 ounces. This is identical in style to bats used by many Major Leaguers in the 1880s and can be seen being held by many ballplayers in period photographs, including in the photographs used on many N172 Old Judge baseball cards. In fact, the bat that Mike "King" Kelly is holding at his side in the famous "Four Base Hits" photograph is practically a dead ringer for this bat. We have seen very few surviving examples of professional quality Wright & Ditson bats. Ideal for display and a very significant nineteenth-century bat rarity. General wear to the applied stripes and Wright & Ditson logo. Overall in Good to Very Good condition. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000.
