1980-2001 Perez-Steele Hall of Fame Postcard Near-Complete Autographed Set (99 of 104 Possible Signed)
Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $5,288
This extraordinary collection of signed Perez-Steele postcards is comprised of ninety-nine of the 104 cards in the set that can possibly be signed and represents the most complete collection of these signed postcards that we have ever offered. In addition to the ninety-nine signed player cards, the collection also includes signed examples of three of the seven cards featuring non Hall of Famers, the most important of which is the card picturing George Bush and Ed Stack (signed by both, Card F, tenth series). The other two non Hall of Famer signed cards are those of Ed Stack (Card D, sixth series), and Peggy Steele, Frank Steele, and Dick Perez (signed by all, Card E, ninth series). This set was assembled by an old-time collector who attempted to have the cards signed as soon as they were issued, preferably in person. As one can see, he was remarkably successful, with just Joe Cronin, Red Ruffing, Satchel Paige, Lloyd Waner, and Waite Hoyt able to elude him. (Waner and Paige are the most difficult to obtain and, not surprisingly, they are also the two most valuable signed cards in the set; each has a "book" value of $2,250.) Perez-Steele Hall of Fame postcards, which are universally recognized as one of the most classic issues ever produced for autograph collectors, were originally issued in fifteen individual series between 1980 and 2001. With the exception of seven cards (featuring Hall of Fame Officials, Perez-Steele Gallery executives and other non-ballplayers) only Baseball Hall of Fame members are included in the set. Each card was limited to a print run of 10,000 and every card is individually numbered on the reverse. Of the 270 cards in the set, only 104 could possibly have been signed by Hall of Fame players (the balance of the players passed away prior to the date of publication). Of the ninety-nine players represented here, nearly half (49) are now deceased. Organized by series, the following are the ninety-nine Hall of Fame player signed cards in this collection: Second Series: Hubbell, Gehringer; Third Series: Dickey, Terry, DiMaggio, Feller, Roush, Lyons, Greenberg; Fourth Series: Appling, T. Williams, Musial, Boudreau, Grimes, Campanella, and Coveleski; Fifth Series: Berra, Gomez, Koufax, Leonard, Wynn, Irvin, Spahn, Bell, Conlan, Ford, Herman, J. Johnson, Kelly, and Averill; Sixth Series: Kiner, Lemon, Roberts, Banks, Lopez, Sewell, Mathews, Kaline, Snider, Gibson, Mize; Seventh Series: Aaron, Chandler, F. Robinson, Kell, Marichal, B. Robinson, T. Jackson, and Alston; Eighth Series: Aparicio, Ferrell, Killebrew, Reese, Brock, Drysdale, Slaughter, Wilhelm; Ninth Series: Doerr, McCovey, Dandridge, Hunter, B. Williams; Tenth Series: Stargell, Barlick, Bench, Schoendienst, Yastrzemski; Eleventh Series: Morgan, Palmer, Carew, Jenkins, Perry. Twelfth Series: Fingers, Newhouser, Seaver, R. Jackson, Carlton, Rizzuto; Thirteenth Series: Ashburn, Schmidt, Bunning, Weaver; Fourteenth Series: Lasorda, Niekro, Doby, Lee MacPhail, Sutton, Brett, Cepeda, Ryan, Yount; Fifteenth Series: Anderson, Fisk, Perez, Mazeroski, Puckett, and Winfield. All of the cards have been signed on the front in either blue or black Sharpie, and the signatures grade "9/10" overall. These cards were all originally displayed in albums, with each card mounted to its page by means of two photo corners (upper left and lower right). As a result of that mounting process each card displays a very minor impression of the former photo corners (barely visible, perhaps not worth noting but mentioned for the sake of extreme accuracy). Regardless of that fact, all of the cards remain in Excellent to Mint condition with the exception of Killebrew (Vg), Kell (Vg), Marichal (Vg), Alston (Vg), Snider (Vg), and Coveleski (Gd). As a point of reference, the 2009 Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards lists the value of the ninety-nine signed Hall of Famer cards featured in this set at $8,577. Total: 102 signed cards. (ninety-nine different player cards plus three signed non Hall of Famer cards). LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$6,000. SOLD FOR $5,288
