1988 Ron Lewis "500 Home Run Club" Signed Lithograph (#102/1000)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,410
Classic 1988 limited-edition signed lithograph of the eleven then-living members of the elite 500 Home Run Club, by renowned sports artist Ron Lewis, beautifully signed by Ted Williams, Frank Robinson, Harmon Killebrew, Reggie Jackson, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Mike Schmidt, Ernie Banks, Eddie Mathews, and Willie McCovey. All signatures are nearly flawless “10s” in blue Sharpie. The lithograph is also signed by the artist, Ron Lewis, in blue marker and is hand-numbered "102/1000." This was a very elaborate, successful, and groundbreaking project when produced in conjunction with the now legendary Atlantic City show in 1988 at which these greats gathered. Many consider this signed lithograph the single best and most well conceived limited-edition signed item ever created. This lithograph is not to be confused with smaller, lower-quality, mass-produced posters of this same image. In addition to the infinitely superior quality and very limited print run of the lithographs, the authenticity of the signatures on the lithographic prints is always a certainty. Many collectors are not aware of the tremendous distinction between the signed limited-edition lithographic art prints and the posters, especially since in catalogs, the images look the same. The lithographic prints are much larger and are of much higher quality. As time passes, undoubtedly the lithographs will become all the more appreciated as collectors learn to fully understand the great distinction between the lithographs that have signatures guaranteed to be authentic and the cheap reproduced posters that are often not authentically signed. In our opinion, the lithographs are one of the great values of all limited-edition autographed display pieces. We think the auction prices of the lithos have been held down by the confusion with the posters, but when viewed in person (and often with reference to authenticity as well) there is just no question that the lithos are far superior in every way. The lithograph (38 x 24 inches) displays three light surface scratches (two at the base near Ted Williams' leg and one just above Aaron's head) and is otherwise in Near Mint condition. Triple matted and framed to total dimensions of 43.5 x 27 inches. Please Note: Due to the size and/or weight of this lot, shipping costs (depending on where it is sent and its method of shipping) may be substantial. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,410
