Unusual 1888 Goodwin "Proof" Cabinet - Corkhill
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $2,644
Upon first glance this card appears to be an N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet of "John S. Corkhill." The photograph includes the traditional "Copyright 1888 Goodwin & Co. NY" to the left in white lettering. The mount, however, instead of featuring an ad for Old Judge Cigarettes, features an ad for a St. Louis-based professional photo studio. This studio apparently provided some of the photographs for Goodwin, probably routinely taking pictures of visiting clubs when they were in the area. Collectors have long referred to cabinet cards of this style produced for Goodwin as "proofs". This is a particularly beautiful cabinet card, with the magnificent studio backdrop giving the image an extra point of interest and great visual appeal. Tremendous photo detail. Crisp and clean front and back. Corkhill's name is written in pencil on the top of the reverse. The cabinet card is otherwise in spectacular Ex-Mt condition. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000.
