1949 Ty Cobb Signed Check
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $940
Personal check, dated 12/8/49, signed by Hall of Fame outfielder Ty Cobb. The check, drawn on The Security National Bank of Reno, Nevada, is made out to "Cash" in the amount of "$10,007," and is signed "Tyrus R. Cobb" in blue ink (grading "9/10"). Ty Cobb, in addition to being the greatest hitter the game has ever seen, was also a shrewd businessman and the first professional athlete to become a millionaire. The fact that he was extremely wealthy is evident by the amount of this check, which is the largest we have ever seen for a Cobb check. The reverse is not endorsed, but bears the handwritten notation "For Deposit Only." The check (8.25 x 3 inches) displays a small tear along the top as a result of staple removal (tiny amount of paper loss), a vertical fold bearing a tear along the top half, and a few light creases. In Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $940
