Mel Ott Signed Photograph

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,998

8 x 10-inch photo of Hall of Fame outfielder Mel Ott, signed by Ott in black fountain pen on the front. Ott has inscribed the photo "To Larry - Best Wishes - Mel Ott," with both the inscription and signature grading "10." The "Larry" to whom this photo is addressed is our consignor's father, who personally obtained it during the 1950s. It should be noted that this photo was one of numerous highlights from his father's substantial autograph collection, the entirety of which is being offered in this auction (represented by over thirty separate lots). Ott was one of the greatest sluggers of his era and the third man in baseball history to amass over 500 home runs. Despite his legendary status, authentic Mel Ott signature examples, especially on photos, are particularly scarce today due to his untimely death in 1958 at the age of forty-nine. Ott was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1951. The photo has two small pieces of tape in the upper corners on the reverse and is in Excellent condition overall. This is an outstanding and ideal signed photograph of Mel Ott, the most elusive member (especially on a photograph) of the fabled 500 Home Run Club. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
