This collection of fourteen St. Louis Cardinals team-signed balls, spanning the years 1939 through 1968, is noteworthy not only for it exceptional condition, but also for its special provenance. Each of these balls originates from the personal collection of Bob Bauman, who was a longtime Major League trainer with both the St. Louis Browns (1937-1953) and St. Louis Cardinals (1954-1988), and has been consigned to this auction directly by his son. (A total of eighty-four team-signed baseballs from the Bauman Collection, offered in twelve separate lots, are featured in this current auction.) Included here is a scarce 1964 World Championship ball, as well as examples dating from the 1942, 1944, and 1967 championship seasons. In our listing for each ball we have duly noted all of the Hall of Fame signatures as well as those of the prominent players. As is common for the time, a number of balls feature "clubhouse" signatures, all of which are also duly noted. 1939: twenty-three blue or black-ink signatures (averaging “4/5”) on an OAL (Harridge) ball, including Medwick (clubhouse signature, sweet spot), Mize (clubhouse signature), Slaughter, Lary, Martin, Gutteridge, Davis, Owen, Bowman, Warneke, Lanier, Cooper, Pepper Martin, Blades (Mgr.), and Moore. Ex-Mt. 1942 (World Champions): sixteen black-ink signatures (averaging “6/7”) on an ONL (Frick) ball: Slaughter, M. Cooper, Triplett, L. Moore, T. Moore, W. Cooper, Crespi, Lanier, Kurowski, Beazley, Hopp, White, Pollet, Narron, Marion, and Gumbert. The letters “F.L.” are written in vintage black ink on a side panel. Ex-Mt. 1943 (National League Champions): twenty-four black-ink signatures (averaging “5/6”) on an ONL (Frick) ball, including Musial, Southworth (Mgr.), Marion (sweet spot), Garms (twice), Klein, Kurowski, Walker (twice), Litwhiler, Dickson, Lanier, M. Cooper, Hopp, and Brecheen. The letters “DEM” are written in vintage black ink near the ball label. Ex. 1944 (World Champions): seventeen blue-ink signatures (averaging “6/7”) on an ONL (Frick) ball (a few signatures display minor smudging): Musial, Martin, Brecheen (sweet spot), Verban, Fallon, W. Cooper, Kurowski, M. Cooper, Jurisich, Hopp, Schmidt, Byerly, Litwhiler, Wilks, Marion, Bergamo, and O’Dea. Light surface wear.
