Circa 1934 Walter Johnson Signed Handwritten Letter
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,528
One-page handwritten letter, penned in black fountain pen, signed by baseball's legendary "Big Train," Walter Johnson. The undated letter is addressed simply "Dear Lawrence" and reads in full: "Your letter came some time ago and I am sorry to be so late in answering it. You no doubt have a fine bunch of boys and I hope some time you will all come up to Cleveland and help us win a ball game. I am sorry I have no photos now but later on I will get some. I hope I will see you some time and many thanks for the letter. Sincerely, Walter Johnson." Both the text and signature have been boldly scripted and grade "9/10." Johnson was manager of the Cleveland Indians from 1933 to 1935 and, based upon the content, this letter almost certainly dates from that three-year period. The legendary "Big Train," who passed away in 1946, was one of the first five inductees into the Baseball Hall of Fame and his signature today, especially in the form of a handwritten letter, is highly prized by collectors. The letter (8.25 x 6.5 inches) displays a horizontal and vertical fold (neither touches upon the signature), a small chip in the upper left corner, a few minor creases, and a few touches of residue on the reverse from having once been mounted in an album. Very Good to Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,528
