1937 Pittsburgh Pirates Team-Signed Ball with Honus Wagner
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,998
Official National League (Frick) ball signed in black fountain pen by the following twenty-two members of the 1937 Pittsburgh Pirates: Honus Wagner (coach, “6/7”), P. Waner, L. Waner, Vaughan, Traynor (player/manager), Schulte, Bowman, Brown, Tobin, Handley, Brandt (sweet spot), Padden (sweet spot), Blanton, Bauers, Dickshot, Weaver, Brubaker, Young, Todd, Ens (coach), Jensen, and Lucas. Signatures range from “4” to “8,” averaging “6/7.” Despite the presence of three future Hall of Famers in the lineup (Lloyd Waner, Paul Waner, and Arky Vaughan), each of whom batted over .320, the Pirates could manage no better than third place in 1937, finishing ten games behind the Giants. The season also marked the final appearance of Pie Traynor as a player. Traynor penciled his name in the lineup five times in 1937 before officially retiring from active duty after the season. He continued to manage the club for the next two years. In addition to Lloyd Waner, Paul Waner, and Arky Vaughan, this ball is highlighted by a magnificent side-panel signature of then-coach and Pirate legend Honus Wagner. The ball has been coated with a light layer of protective shellac and is otherwise in Near Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,998
