Hugh Duffy/Duffy Lewis Signed Autograph Album Page
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $411
Album sheet, removed from the legendary autograph album compiled by Dr. John O'Meara in the 1930s, signed by Hall of Fame outfielder Hugh Duffy and Duffy Lewis. (The original near-complete album is also offered in this auction; please see the lot description for full details.) Both players have signed the sheet in black fountain pen. Duffy's signature is the stronger of the two, grading ‘10,’ while Lewis' signature grades ‘8/9.’ It is probably no coincidence that O'Meara had each player sign this page, for although they played in different eras, each was considered to be one of the greatest outfielders in Boston history. Hugh Duffy played with the Boston Braves in the 1890s and was a star both at the plate and in the field. Duffy holds the Major League record for highest batting average in a season (.440 in 1894) and he finished his career with a .324 lifetime average. On the defensive side, he and fellow outfielder Tommy McCarthy were so adept in the field that the Boston faithful commonly referred to them as the ‘Heavenly Twins.’ Duffy Lewis joined the Boston Red Sox in 1910, where he took his place in left field alongside Tris Speaker and Harry Hooper in what is still regarded as the greatest outfield in Boston history. Known primarily for his defense, Lewis was so skilled at playing the fifteen-foot incline at Fenway Park that the slope came to be known as ‘Duffy's Cliff.’ O'Meara, who resided in Providence, Rhode Island, was certainly well aware of each player's legend in Boston baseball history and thus found it fitting to have their signatures appear together on the same page. The page (5.5 x 4.5 inches) has been neatly removed from the original album and is in Near Mint condition. Encapsulated by Beckett Grading Services in conjunction with James Spence Authentication. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $300+ SOLD FOR $411
