Honus Wagner Signed Autograph Album Page
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,410
Album sheet, removed from the legendary autograph album compiled by Dr. John O'Meara in the 1930s, signed by Hall of Fame shortstop Honus Wagner. (The original near-complete album is also offered in this auction; please see the lot description for full details.) This Wagner signature example, which is flawless in its execution, is accentuated by the many additional comments added by the legendary ‘Flying Dutchman.’ The fully inscribed page, scripted in blue fountain pen, reads in full: Aug 20 33 With best wishes J Honus Wagner Pirates Born Feb 24-1874 Age 59.’ Both the signature and text are impeccable and grade a perfect ‘10.’ Wagner was serving his first season as a coach with the Pirates in 1933. Research indicates the Pirates were in Boston for a four-game series with the Braves from August 19th through August 22nd in 1933. August 20th was a Sunday, and O'Meara, who resided in Providence, Rhode Island, obviously chose the weekend to make the short journey to Boston and meet Wagner. The trip was obviously worth it, for this is one of the finest Wagner signature examples we have ever seen and certainly one of the great highlights in O'Meara's album. The page (5.5 x 4.5 inches) has been neatly removed from the original album and is in Near Mint condition. Encapsulated by Beckett Grading Services in conjunction with James Spence Authentication. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,410
