Exceptional 1933 Babe Ruth Signed Photo

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,938

Original photo of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and three other Yankee players posing together with an unidentified individual on the steps of the dugout, signed and dated by Babe Ruth in black fountain pen. Ruth has boldly inscribed the photo "To Frank Vlina From Babe Ruth - Feb 7th 1933," with both the signature and inscription grading "9/10." Although we will never know for certain, one can only assume that the unidentified gentleman in the photo is the referenced Frank Vlina. The photo (7 x 6.5 inches) displays five separate minor tears, all of which have been repaired on the reverse by means of vintage clear tape. (Two of the tears touch upon, but do not significantly affect, the Ruth signature.) While technically in Good condition, the strength of the signature more than outweighs the modest flaws, making this an exceptional Babe Ruth signed photo dating from his penultimate season in pinstripes. Quality photographs of Ruth and Gehrig posing in the dugout (unsigned, let alone signed) are particularly rare and unusual. Handsomely matted and framed to total dimensions of 19.5 x 19.5 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $2,938
