1934 New York Yankees Team-Signed Baseball with Ruth, Gehrig, and Grimes

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $7,638

Spalding "Babe Ruth Home Run Special" ball signed in black fountain pen by the following twenty-four members of the 1934 New York Yankees: Ruth (sweet spot, grading "8"), Gehrig ("8"), Sewell, Gomez, Grimes, Ruffing, Dickey, McCarthy (Mgr., clubhouse signature), Chapman, Rolfe, Fletcher (coach, clubhouse signature), Saltzgaver, Murphy, Crosetti, Hoag, DeShong, Byrd, MacFayden, Heffner, Broaca, Walker, Allen, Van Atta, and Jorgens. Signatures range from "4" to "8," averaging "7." The signature of Hall of Fame pitcher Burleigh Grimes on this ball not only conclusively dates it to 1934 (Grimes only played with the Yankees in that one season), but also makes it a very rare 1934 Yankees team-signed example. Grimes began the year with the Cardinals before being traded to the Yankees early in the season. His stay in New York was quite short, as he appeared in only ten games with the club before being traded once again to the Pirates. This is the only 1934 Yankees team ball dating to Grimes' brief tenure with the club that we can ever recall seeing. This ball has been in the family of our consignor since 1934 and is therefore new to the hobby. According to oral history, the ball, which has always been carefully preserved and considered a family heirloom, was personally obtained by our consignor's grandfather at a Yankees practice held in Fort Lee, New Jersey. Interestingly, this family history regarding the ball is consistent with a little known fact regarding the Yankees: unbeknownst to many, the Yankees occasionally practiced and played exhibition games in Fort Lee and it was at one of those practices that this ball was signed. This is a beautiful ball with a particularly outstanding Babe Ruth signature, in addition to an extremely strong and bold Lou Gehrig signature. The ball displays two small areas of age toning (one of which touches upon the Ruth signature) and is in Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000+. SOLD FOR $7,638
