Circa 1946 Babe Ruth Single-Signed Baseball

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $7,638

Official American League (Harridge) ball signed in blue ink across the sweet spot by Babe Ruth. The signature has been boldly scripted and grades "9." Based upon the design of the label, this ball dates from the 1946-1959 manufacturing period; thus it was signed by Ruth sometime between 1946 and 1948 (Ruth passed away on August 16, 1948). Ruth's health was steadily declining during that three-year period; however, until his last few months he was able to beautifully sign balls and photos when he felt up to it, which was often, and the signature on this ball bears little evidence of Ruth's deteriorating physical condition. All of the strokes are strong and deliberate, and the signature is a magnificent and ideal example. The sweet spot and both adjacent side panels have been coated with a moderate, uneven, layer of protective shellac; otherwise, the ball is in Excellent to Mint condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000+. SOLD FOR $7,638
