1932 Babe Ruth Signed Photo
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,231
Original black-and-white photo of Babe Ruth posing with his wife Claire, signed and dated by Ruth in blue fountain pen. The inscription reads "To Charlie & Jess - From Claire & Babe Ruth - Feb. 28 1932." The "h" in "Ruth" is somewhat light, otherwise both the signature and text grade "8/9." Ruth married Claire Hodgson in 1929 (it was the second marriage for each of them; both of their former spouses had passed away prior to their union) and they remained wed until Ruth's death in 1948. Based upon their clothing and the flora in the background, it appears that this photo was taken in Florida, where Ruth was probably getting ready to attend spring training. Just two weeks after inscribing this photo Ruth inked a new $75,000 contract with the Yankees that also guaranteed him a percentage of the profits from all Yankees exhibition games. The photo (8 x 10 inches) displays three light rust-stained paper clip impressions in the top left (barely noticeable and mentioned only for the sake of accuracy) and scrapbook paper remnants on the reverse from having once been mounted in an album. The photograph is otherwise in strong Excellent condition and displays exceptionally well. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $3,231
