1927 Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig Signed Baseball

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,525

Goldsmith "Official League Ball" signed in black fountain pen by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Ruth's signature, as is customary, appears along the sweet spot, while Gehrig's is situated on the panel directly below. Ideally, the close proximity of the signatures allows for both to be viewed together when the ball is properly displayed. The "t" and "h" in "Ruth" have faded and are barely visible, otherwise, the remainder of the signature grades "6." The Gehrig signature grades "5." Although the origin of this ball is unknown, a number of additional signatures and notations suggest it may have possibly been signed in 1927 during the famous "Bustin' Babes and Larrupin' Lou's" barnstorming tour. The name "Bob Thornton" appears on the west panel and the name "H. Strabler" is located on the north panel; each scripted in black fountain pen. Neither player was a Major League ballplayer and their identities remain a mystery. Written above Strabler's name, also in black fountain pen, is a notation that appears to read "Shea Brothers - Toledo Ohio." In 1927 the famed Bustin' Babes and Larrupin' Lous barnstorming tour made a stop in Lima, Ohio, which is due south of Toledo. Coming from the east, it is likely that the tour's route took the pair into Toledo first before heading south to Lima, and then continuing west to Kansas City, Missouri, which was the next stop on the trip. This is all pure speculation, of course, but given the cryptic notations, it appears to be a likely possibility. The ball is moderately toned, with a few minor abrasions, but all of the manufacturer's stampings are clearly legible. In Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $3,525
