Vintage 1930s Baseball Autograph Collection Including 1930 Braves and Cardinals Teams (15 sheets, 200 signatures)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,644
Addendum: Please note that the 1930 Cardinals team sheet includes an extremely early Dizzy Dean signature (signed "Herman Dean"). This information was mistakenly omitted from the catalog description.
Collection of fifteen multisigned autograph album pages and team sheets, nearly all of which date from the 1930s. The two most striking collections within the assemblage are the two team-signed sheets (5.5 x 9 inches) signed by the 1930 St. Louis Cardinals, and the matching two team-signed sheets signed by the 1930 Boston Braves, respectively. The first page for each club features the team name written along the top in grand calligraphic style, followed by designated spots for the team president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, manager, and players to sign (most of the front office signatures are missing from each sheet). The two Cardinals team pages feature thirty-two black fountain pen signatures, including Chick Hafey (twice), Jim Bottomley, Jesse Haines, Frankie Frisch, Burleigh Grimes, Bill Hallahan, Taylor Douthit, Charley Gelbert, and Gabby Street. The two Boston team pages feature twenty-nine black-fountain pen signatures, including Bill McKechnie, George Sisler, Rabbit Maranville, Wallly Berger, Tom Zachary, and Hank Gowdy. The remainder of the collection is comprised of eleven multisigned autograph album pages (five are signed on the front and back) featuring a total of 139 signatures (a number of players are featured more than once). Four of these additional eleven album pages feature signatures of either the 1930 or 1931 Cardinals, while another features the signatures of the circa 1935 Cubs; the others are players from various teams. The Hall of Fame signatures included on the eleven album pages are those of Berra, Bottomley (twice), Cuyler, Dean, DiMaggio (in pencil, alone on the reverse of a sheet that appears to date from the 1940s), Frisch (twice), Grimes, Hafey (twice), Haines, Hartnett, Herman, Klein, and Maranville. Other signatures on the eleven album sheets include those of Taylor Douthit (twice) Pepper Martin, Charley Gelbert, Jimmie Wilson (twice), Duffy Lewis, Dixie Howell (twice), Hugh Casey, Phil Cavaretta, Buddy Hassett, Paul Derringer, Bill Hallahan, Eddie Waitkus (twice), Joe Adcock, and Gene Woodling. In total, there are twenty-five vintage Hall of Fame signatures featured in this collection, representing fifteen different players. All of the signatures, scripted in either pencil or ink, range in grade from "6" to "10," averaging "8/9." The additional eleven album sheets all measure approximately 5.5 x 4 inches and the collection, as a whole, is in Excellent condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Total 15 sheets with 200 signatures (4 large team sheets and 11 album sheets). Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,644
