1920 Honus Wagner Signed Check
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,645
Bank check signed by legendary Hall of Fame shortstop Honus Wagner. The check, dated January 16, 1920, and drawn on the Carnegie Trust Company, is made out to "P. J. Coyle & Son" in the amount of $64.50. It is signed “John H. Wagner” in black fountain pen (grading "9") along the base. A handwritten "P. J. Doyle & Son" endorsement appears on the reverse. Autograph collectors have always placed a special premium on checks due to their inherent authenticity. The offered Wagner check is an extremely early example and dates just three years after his retirement from baseball. Wagner checks are far rarer than Cobb or even Ruth checks, with just a small number discovered and released by the family in relatively recent years. Decades ago, Cobb and Ruth checks were available in far greater quantities, literally by the hundreds, and they have been easily absorbed by the marketplace, suggesting a very bright future in the years to come for the few Wagner checks circulating. The check (8 x 3 inches) displays two tiny tears (in the upper left and lower right corners, respectively) and three light vertical fold lines (one of which touches upon the "J" in "John.". Standard bank cancellation stamps appear on both the front and reverse. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,645
