1895 N566 Newsboy Tobacco Cabinet SGC-Graded Collection (9)
Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $16,450
Collection of nine different 1895 N566 Newsboy Tobacco cabinet cards, of which six are graded and encapsulated by SGC. Newsboy cabinet cards were issued by the National Tobacco Works of New York City to promote their Newsboy Tobacco brand. Newsboys are extremely rare and one of the very few baseball-card sets issued during the 1890s. While similar in construction to N173 Old Judge cabinet cards, they are actually much rarer, all the more so in high grade as the mounts on Newsboy cabinets are not as thick and sturdy as Old Judge cabinets, and thus are also far more susceptible to damage. It is at least in part because of their greater rarity that Newsboys have not received the attention that Old Judges have received in recent years. There are only fourteen different baseball players currently known in the Newsboy set. Each is numbered and most are members of the 1894 New York Giants championship team. Included in this group are only New York Giants players. Each card is numbered. The mounts of Newsboy cabinets were issued with rounded corners. The offered collection consists of nine cards (six SGC-graded, 3 ungraded): #174 Yale Murphy (SGC VG 40, downgraded for edge and heavy corner wear; we grade this card Good), 176 Michael Tiernan (SGC EX 60; Ex due to just a hint of edge wear, otherwise Nr/Mt-Mt with perfect photo; beautiful extremely high-grade example), 177 Eddie Burke (SGC VG/EX 50), 178 Jack Doyle (SGC VG 40, downgraded due to light age toning/foxing on the photo), 179 Shorty Fuller (SGC FAIR 20, Ex-Mt photo downgraded for a strip of tape residue along the top on front and a small piece of clear tape on reverse; great-looking card), 180 George Van Haltren (SGC FAIR 20, Ex appearance downgraded due to a light stain on the bottom border, a couple very light creases in the upper right, and pencil notations on the reverse; great-looking card with bright, clean photo). The following three Newsboys are lesser examples that we did not have SGC grade (due to condition) but which are still an asset to the group: 182 Jouett Meekin (Pr), 201 Dad Clarke (Gd), and 202 Parke Wilson (Pr). This is a tremendous collection of Newsboys, the largest group of different cards from this set we can ever recall offering, in various grades but including many particularly strong cards, some of which (as is often the case with nineteeth-century photographic cards) have an appearance significantly stronger than suggested by their SGC-assigned grades. Total 9 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $16,450
