Rare 1953 Glendale Meats Art Houtteman - PSA EX-MT 6 - Highest-Graded!

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $9,400

Graded EX-MT 6 by PSA. Highest-graded example ever! From the Charlie Conlon Collection. This extremely sharp, ultra high-grade example of legendary regional rarity Art Houtteman, by many accounts, was Charlie Conlon's single favorite card. Even his undeniably far more valuable T206 Planks, T206 Doyle, and 1933 Goudey Lajoies could not compete with Charlie's appreciation for this Houtteman card. Glendales were always a high priority for Charlie, and a primary focus of his collecting for decades. Charlie lived in the Detroit area (where the series was issued) and Glendales were one of his favorite sets. For over thirty years he searched for Glendale Meats cards, acquiring cards whenever they were available and constantly upgrading. The Art Houtteman card is extremely rare in any condition, and is certainly one of the great regional issue rarities of the era. For a Glendale collector, Houtteman is like the "T206 Wagner of the Glendale Meats set." With so few examples known, it is almost certain that Houtteman was intentionally short printed and that this short printing relates to the Glendale contest offer presented on the back of each card. Because of their method of issue, when they are found, Glendales are almost always in very low grade. It is easy to see why this extraordinary high-grade Houtteman, the highest-graded example of this legendary rarity known to exist, would be so highly prized by Charlie Conlon, the consummate collector of both Glendale Meats cards and extreme rarities in general. The card is extremely bright and clean, both front and back, with perfect image quality, four sharp corners displaying just the slightest hint of wear (predominately the lower left), and centered just a touch to the left. The highest-grade Glendale Meats card of Art Houtteman known to exist. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $9,400
