1967 Topps Test Stand-Up Collection (12)

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $41,125

Collection of twelve different exceedingly rare 1967 Topps Stand-Ups, highlighted by Hall of Famers Don Drysdale and Jim "Catfish" Hunter. All twelve are of the rarer and more desirable thick die-cut variety, which is the form in which the cards were actually intended to be issued (as opposed to thin proof cards cut from sheets). 1967 Topps Stand-Ups are one of the rarest and most intriguing of all 1960s Topps issues. It is almost certain that these cards were never issued to the public, and their astounding rarity is consistent with this speculation. Literally only a handful of 1967 Topps Stand-Ups of each player are known to exist in the entire collecting world. Though both styles are exceedingly rare, the thick cardboard die-cut style cards are considerably rarer than the thin proof card examples cut from sheets. The cards were produced on one-quarter inch thick cardboard stock which has been die-cut punched. The design allows the player's head to be punched out of the black background. Additional small punched-out pieces along the bottom of the card, when properly used, were intended to allow the player's head to stand for display. Thick cardboard examples such as these which have gone through the entire production process are very rarely seen. Occasionally a single card surfaces at auction. Offered are twelve of the twenty-four cards comprising this extraordinarily rare Topps test baseball issue: #2 Peters (Vg-Ex), 5 Swoboda (Ex front with remnants of scrapbook paper on the back), 9 Fregosi (Gd-Vg), 11 Drysdale (Ex), 14 McCarver (Vg-Ex), 15 Howard (Vg-Ex), 16 Alvis (Vg), 17 Staub (Gd-Vg front with remnants of scrapbook paper on the back), 18 Allen (appears Ex-Mt but closer examination reveals a few very light surface creases on the back), 22 Santo (Vg-Ex/Ex), 23 Hunter (Vg), and 24 Wynn (Ex). These are very difficult to grade, because their design and production is so different from other cards, but we think we have at least provided a meaningful guide. The catalog and Internet images will provide more information, and we believe that many will judge these rarities as having an appearance superior to that implied by our grades. This is an extraordinary group of cards, representing exactly half a set, from this unbelievably rare Topps test issue. From the Charlie Conlon Collection. Total 12 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $41,125
