1889 M-UNC Police Gazette Cabinet Trimmed Collection (5)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,938
Collection of five exceedingly rare 1889 M-UNC Police Gazette cabinet cards, each of which has been trimmed to its current dimension. 1) Sam Thompson (3.75 x 5.25 inches). Trimmed to the photo on all four sides. Tape residue on each corner from having once been mounted in an album. 2) Harry Staley (4.125 x 6 inches). Four small tack holes in mount; faint pencil notation on photo and pencil notations on reverse, trim along bottom border of mount. 3) A. B. Sanders (4.375 x 6 inches). Corner wear, surface wear, pencil and ink notations on reverse, trim along bottom border of mount. 4) Charley Smith (4.125 x 6 inches). Surface chip in lower left, trim along bottom border of mount. 5) A. J. Maul (4.125 x 6 inches). Heavy scratch in photo, pencil and ink notations on reverse, trim along bottom border of mount. While condition is always of utmost importance with regard to value, one cannot overlook the rarity of these cards. The opportunities to obtain Police Gazette cabinets are few and far between. For that reason collectors may find that these five cards represent tremendous value, especially given the fact that for many of the players in the set few, if any, high-grade examples exist. Except for Thompson, all of the cards are only slightly trimmed (along the bottom border), present extremely well, and would be perfectly suitable for even the most advanced collections. Total 5 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,938
