1953 Glendale Meats Near-Complete Set (24 of 28)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,113
Medium-grade near-complete set of 1953 Glendale Meats consisting of 24 different of the 28 cards in the set, missing only the following four cards for completion: Foytack, Hitchcock, Houtteman, and Sullivan. The regionally issued 1953 Glendale Meats set features only Detroit Tigers players. One card was inserted in each pack of Glendale hot dogs. Their striking design and legendary rarity have always made Glendales one of the most significant and desirable regional issues of the era.
The reverse of each card invites youngsters to collect the set and mail them in to Glendale to potentially win one of three pairs of tickets to the World Series. Because of how they were issued, condition has always been a problem with Glendales in general. These cards are from the Charlie Conlon Collection. Charlie lived in the Detroit area and Glendales were one of his favorite sets. For over thirty years he searched for Glendale Meats cards, acquiring cards whenever they were available and constantly upgrading, but rarely parting with duplicates. When he liked a set, he couldn't get enough of a good thing! The cards in this near-set are all duplicates that he was able to upgrade, and were therefore not part of his highest-grade set (which is complete and offered elsewhere in the catalog). This is an extremely attractive mid-grade near-complete set of twenty-four different cards. Most of the cards look substantially better than their technically accurate assigned grades. We have submitted three cards for grading by SGC. Condition composite: Nineteen cards range from Vg to Vg-Ex (with a couple slightly better): Batts (SGC VG/EX 50), Bucha, Carswell, Dropo, Erickson, Friend, Garver, Ginsberg, Hatfield, Herbert, Hoeft, Jordan, Kuenn, Madison, Muloin (SGC VG 40), Nieman, Pesky, Priddy, and Souchock (SGC VG 40). Five cards are lesser: Delsing (pencil on back), Gray, Lund (pinhole), Marlowe (pinhole), and Wight (erasure mark). This collection represents a very rare opportunity to acquire an extremely attractive near-complete mid-grade complete set of this classic 1950s regional food issue. From the Charlie Conlon Collection. Total 24 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,113
