1953 Glendale Meats Advertising Booklet

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $23,500

This extremely rare twenty-eight-page promotional booklet, issued in 1953 by the Glendale Provision Co., features images of all twenty-eight baseball cards offered by the company that year. “Glendale Meats,” as the set is commonly known, was a regional issue in the Michigan marketplace and cards could only be obtained in packages of the company’s hot dogs. The set featured only Detroit Tigers players. This booklet pictures the front of each issued card. Each card is pictured on a separate page, below which appears the biographical data found on the reverse of the actual card (with the exception of the player’s season stats and the contest offer for the chance to win a free trip for two to the World Series, which appear only on the cards). We have had this special booklet only once before (decades ago), and for all we know this is the very same one. It is not surprising that this Glendale booklet originates from the collection of Charlie Conlon, who lived in Michigan and was an avid collector of Glendale Meats cards for over thirty years. The booklet (3.75 x 5.5 inches) has a light water stain on the cover that permeates the first four pages (not affecting the card images). The remaining pages are clean and bright and the booklet is in overall Very Good condition. It is not known how this booklet was distributed, but we suspect that it was produced to be given away in very limited numbers, perhaps directly from Glendale Meats salesmen or distributors. The front cover reads "Compliments of Glendale Meats Provison Co.," and the back cover has the Glendale logo and reads Presented by Glendale "King of the Hot Dogs." The 1953 Glendale Meats set is one of the most popular and attractive of all 1950s regional issues. This an extraordinary rarity that all alone is the moral equivalent of a complete Glendale Meats set and would be the perfect compliment to any Glendale Meats collection, especially a complete high-grade set. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $23,500
