1888 N173 Old Judge Cabinets Collection (13) Including Buck Ewing and King Kelly
Starting Bid - $1,500, Sold For - $10,575
Collection of thirteen N173 Old Judge cabinet cards, highlighted by Hall of Famers Buck Ewing and Mike "King" Kelly. This is low-grade group of these extremely substantial nineteenth-century rarities, each technically in Fair condition (a couple are good, several poor) due to various flaws, but still high-quality, attractive cards. Old Judge cabinet cards have always been revered by collectors as among the most desirable of all pre-1900 issues. This collection of thirteen consists of the following: Beatin, Cleveland - hands at chest (rare 1889 copyright date); Caruthers, Brooklyn - batting; Daly, Chicago - hands chest high; Buck Ewing, New York - fielding (SGC FAIR 20; downgraded in part due to a very tiny tear at top and bottom and light soiling front and back, photo is a little light, but still a very presentable example of one of the nineteenth century's premier Hall of Famers); Foutz, Brooklyn - batting (1888 copyright date); Hutchinson, Chicago - right heel visible (rare 1889 copyright date, very sharp photo contrast with an elaborate banner for his name, has paper and glue on reverse; great-looking card!); Mike "King" Kelly, Boston (the photo is separating from the mount in several places but still attached and the mount is starting to peel apart, some surface paper loss to reverse in lower right, photo is a little light and has foxing, still a nice-looking card and a rare, relatively affordable low-grade example of one of the key Hall of Famers in the set); Nichols, Pittsburgh - catching, hands at chest (Pr, rare 1889 copyright date); Quinn, Boston - hands at chin (players name, position and team neatly written on the reverse, surface abrasion in the center, no creases, nice photo with a elaborate studio background, otherwise Ex); Ryan, Chicago - bat at side (Pr, chipping to mount); Sanders, Philadelphia - right hand head-high (1888 copyright date); Tiernan, New York - batting (approximately Good condition due to scattered green ink marks at top and bottom of photo, otherwise Ex with tremendous photo contrast); and Wise, Boston - hands on knee (with extremely rare brown mount, grades Gd). A very attractive low-grade collection, including Hall of Famers Buck Ewing and Mike "King" Kelly, from one of card collecting's most substantial and desirable cabinet-card issues. Total 13 cards. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000+. SOLD FOR $10,575
