1952 Topps #1 Andy Pafko Color-Process Proof Cards (6)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,819

Matching set of six 1952 Topps color process proofs for card #1 Andy Pafko. Each of these six cards is unique. These are the very first 1952 Topps #1 Andy Pafko cards ever printed. The first color-process proof sheets for "Series 1A" were printed over the course of seven days in February 1952 (between February 9 and February 15). The final color-process sheet, which was originally accompanied by six color-process sheets, has remained intact and is offered as a complete sheet in the preceding lot. The six color-process proof sheets have since been perfectly cut and organized by player, and are presented in player sets represented by this lot and the nineteen lots that follow. These color-process proofs for the very first 1952 Topps cards were printed strictly for internal quality control and review prior to authorizing production quantities. Each of these color combinations represents a step toward the printing of the first final process sheet with all colors. These cards are each unique and naturally have enormous historical significance to the 1952 Topps set . The #1 Andy Pafko card is a particularly significant card in the 1952 Topps set, the premier set of the postwar era. It is one of card collecting's most famous and important condition rarities. These first-ever printed proof examples of the #1 Andy Pafko card, however, have a far greater significance as the very first examples ever printed of the first card in the 1952 Topps set. Each 1952 Topps proof card group includes the following color processes (as noted, missing only the final process, which could easily be represented by an issued card): 1) Red, yellow, and blue printing. This is a fascinating color proof card which is very close in appearance to a final process card, but with the black printing missing. 2) Yellow and red printing. 3) Yellow printing. 4) Red printing. 5) Blue printing. 6) Black printing. Each color-process proof card is in MINT condition and is encapsulated as "Authentic" by SGC. Total 6 proof cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,819
