1952 Topps Complete Set Minus One (406 of 407 cards)
Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $18,800
1952 Topps near-complete set of 406 cards (missing just #311 Mantle for completion, which is offered separately as its own lot). This is an outstanding opportunity to acquire a complete set (minus #311 Mantle) of 1952 Topps, the premier postwar gum-card set, without spending the fortune that this set would cost in a higher grade, or the considerably higher amount that it would almost certainly cost to put this set together one card at a time. That said, included are many significant highlights, including strong examples of valuable key cards such as #407 Mathews (SGC EX 60, equivalent SMR value $3,000). While the condition of cards from this set spans several grades, even the lesser-graded cards are very pleasing and exhibit bright colors and crisp focus. The low numbers (#1-310) grade as follows: 30% range from Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt (includes a few slightly better), 65% Vg, and 5% trimmed. The rare high numbers (#311-407) grade as follows: 20% range from Ex to Ex-Mt (includes a few slightly better), 20% Vg-Ex, 35% Vg and 25% lesser (mostly Gd). We have selected twenty-three cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC. Low-Number Keys (1-310): #1 Pafko (SGC VG/EX 50), 2 Runnels (Gd), 11 Rizzuto (Gd), 20 Loes RC (Gd), 22 DiMaggio (Vg-Ex), 26 Irvin (Vg), 29 Kluszewski (Vg-Ex), 33 Spahn (Vg), 36 Hodges (Vg-Ex), 37 Snider (Vg), 48 Page/correct (Vg), 49 Sain/correct (Gd-Vg), 57 Lopat (Vg), 59 Roberts (Vg-Ex/Ex), 65 Slaughter (Vg), 66 Roe (Vg), 67 Reynolds (Vg), 88 Feller (SGC Auth, trimmed), 91 Schoendienst (Vg), 122 Jensen (Vg-Ex), 129 Mize (Gd-Vg), 175 Martin RC (Gd-Vg), 191 Berra (SGC VG/EX 50), 195 Minoso RC (Vg-Ex), 215 Bauer (Vg), 216 Ashburn (SGC VG/EX 50), 227 Garagiola (trimmed), 243 Doby (Gd-Vg), 246 Kell (trimmed), 250 Erskine (Gd-Vg), 261 Mays (SGC Auth, trimmed), 268 Lemon (trimmed), 274 Branca (Vg), and 277 Wynn (Vg/Vg-Ex). High-Number Keys (#311-407): #312 Robinson (SGC VG 40), 313 Thomson (SGC EX 60), 314 Campanella (SGC VG 40), 315 Durocher (SGC VG 40), 317 High # (SGC EX 60), 321 Black RC (SGC GOOD 30), 326 Shuba RC (SGC EX 60), 333 Reese (SGC Auth, trimmed), 342 Labine RC (Vg-Ex), 344 Blackwell (SGC EX/NM 80), 347 Adcock (Gd-Vg), 350 High # (SGC VG/EX 50), 351 Dark (Vg), 356 High # (SGC EX+ 70), 357 Burgess (SGC NM+ 86), 369 Groat RC (Vg), 372 McDougald RC (Gd), 377 Dressen (SGC NM+ 86), 382 Jones RC (Gd), 384 Crosetti (Gd), 388 High # (SGC Auth, trimmed), 392 Wilhelm RC (SGC VG/EX 50), 394 Herman (Vg), 395 High # (SGC NM/MT 88), 396 Williams RC (Ex), 400 Dickey (SGC EX 60), 406 Nuxhall RC (Gd), and 407 Mathews (SGC EX 60). The amazing thing about a quality medium-grade 1952 Topps set such as this is the outstanding value it offers compared to cards in higher grade, as well as the comfort provided by the natural potential "break value" associated with such a set. This is a rarely offered, very pleasing mixed-grade complete set of one of baseball-card collecting's premier issues, with numerous significant condition highlights. Total 406 cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000++. SOLD FOR $18,800
