1952 Topps Jackie Robinson and Ed Mathews (2)
Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $4,406
Two extraordinarily high grade 1952 Topps gum cards, both graded NM-MT 8 (OC) by PSA: #312 Jackie Robinson and #407 Ed Mathews. This is a stunning high-grade pair of cards from the most popular gum-card issue of the 1950s. These two examples each exhibit four razor-sharp corners, flawless registration, perfect colors, and are each perfectly clean both front and back. As anyone who collects 1952 Topps is well aware, centering can be all over the place with cards from this set. Although off-center, the two cards are pack-fresh gems, worthy of the finest 1952 Topps set. While it is a given that off-center cards, all other things being equal, naturally sell at a discount to well-centered cards, they can also represent a tremendous opportunity for buyers. In addition, it should be noted that different grading companies do grade differently with respect to centering. Had these cards been submitted for grading to SGC, due to centering each would have been graded at a lower level than NR/MT-MT 8, but with no qualifier. (SGC does not grade with a OC qualifier). The centering on both is approximately 20/80 L/R. The SMR list value (if they were not qualified as OC) of these two cards is $33,500. Reserve $2,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,406
