1951 Bowman #253 Mickey Mantle - Rookie

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,231

Graded VG-EX+ 4.5 by PSA. Very attractive and extremely strong Very Good-to-Excellent example of Mickey Mantle's true rookie card. We are in full agreement that, as suggested by the PSA half-grade, this card is truly better than a VG-EX card, yet falls just shy of qualifying for EX due to just a hint too much corner wear (but it is very close to EX). This is the type of card that the half-grade system does justice to. One of card collecting's greatest classics, Mantle's Bowman rookie card is the key to the 1951 Bowman set, and one of the most popular and significant of all postwar baseball cards. This striking example has light corner wear, vibrant colors, and is very well centered (just a touch to the left). Clean front and back, with no distracting print lines as is so commonly found with this card. The barely detectable and not particularly distracting hint of a red outline on the top and right of Mantle's cap and bat is due to a very minor printing registration issue. This is an extremely appealing and strong mid-grade example of one of Mantle's most desirable cards (the other being his 1952 Topps). Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $3,231
