1949 Leaf #138 Larry Doby Rookie Card - PSA NM-MT 8

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,231

Graded NM-MT 8 by PSA. One of only six examples graded at this level with none graded higher. Presented is an exceptionally high-grade gem example of this short-printed "Rare Leaf" rookie card featuring Hall of Famer Larry Doby. The 1949 Leaf Bubble Gum card of Doby is the most popular and striking of all his cards. It is also a genuine rarity, being one of the forty-nine scarce cards in the 1948-1949 Leaf Gum Co. set. Leafs are sometimes technically in high grade, but with serious problems related to the unusual and often inconsistent Leaf printing process. Usually it is the toning; if not the toning, it is the focus; and if not the focus, it is print dots. The offered card is an exceptional example. The clean, white borders of the card frame a virtually flawless image which is centered slightly to the bottom left (approximately 35/65 L/R and 55/45 T/B). All four corners are razor-sharp and virtually perfect, with just the slightest hint of wear visible under magnification from reverse on the tips, about as sharp as possible for this issue. The reverse is clean and free of staining and excess print. Pack-fresh, crisp, high-grade example of Doby’s most classic card, worthy of the finest collection. SMR value for the assigned grade is $3,500. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $3,231
