1940 Play Ball Complete Set (240)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,700

Presented is a rarely offered and extremely consistent complete set of the classic 1940 Play Ball set issued by Gum, Inc., with tremendous eye-appeal throughout. With all the Hall of Famers, current and past, and rare high-number series cards (#181 thru 240), the number of noteworthy cards in this set rivals the number of common cards. The 1940 Play Ball has always been a difficult set to acquire, and the rarity of complete sets has been underappreciated. It is also a set that has become even rarer in complete form in recent years, in part due to its extraordinary break value, and the inclusion of several particularly high value key cards (among them Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, and Joe Jackson). Eighty-two of the cards are printed with advertising for the Superman set printed along the bottom of the reverse (including some cards that we have never before seen printed with this ad). We have selected twelve cards to be graded by SGC. Keys: #1 DiMaggio (SGC EX 60), 6 Gomez (Vg), 7 Dickey (Vg), 10 Ruffing (Vg-Ex), 21 Ferrell (Ex), 27 Williams (SGC VG 40; Popular second-year card, downgraded for corner wear, no creases), 30 Berg (Vg), 38 Doerr (Vg-Ex), 40 Greenberg (SGC VG/EX 50), 41 Gehringer (SGC EX/NM 80), 46 Averill (Gd), 87 Hubbell (99/1 L/R, otherwise Ex), 88 Ott (Gd), 102 Klein (Vg-Ex), 104 P. Waner (Gd), 105 L. Waner (Ex-Mt), 107 Vaughan (Vg-Ex), 118 Hoyt (Ex), 119 Alexander (no right border, otherwise Gd), 120 Johnson (Vg), 124 Combs (Vg, Superman ad on back), 129 Harris (Vg-Ex), 132 Mack (Vg), 133 Foxx (Vg, Superman ad on back), 134 Cronin (Gd-Vg), 141 Stengel (Vg-Ex/Ex), 142 Kelly (Ex-Mt), 153 McKechnie (Ex), 158 T. Jackson (Vg-Ex/Ex), 167 Frisch (Gd-Vg, Superman ad on back), 168 Wagner (SGC EX 60, Superman ad on back), 170 Speaker (SGC EX 60, Superman ad on back), 171 Heilmann (Vg-Ex/Ex), 172 Bender (Vg-Ex), 173 Lajoie (SGC Auth, slight trim, otherwise Ex-Mt), 174 Evers (Vg/Vg-Ex, Superman ad on back), 175 Mathewson (SGC EX 60, Superman ad on back), 176 Manush (Ex-Mt, Superman ad on back), 177 Baker (Ex), 178 Carey (Ex, Superman ad on back), 179 Sisler (Vg), 180 Cochrane (Vg), 223 Jennings (Ex, Superman ad on back), 224 Traynor (Gd-Vg, Superman ad on back), 225 "Shoeless" Joe Jackson (SGC GOOD 30. The card displays four square corners, with a brilliant image, and centered to the left. Harshly graded by SGC due to a tiny flake of paper loss on the bottom border of the reverse. We grade this card Vg-Ex or better. Superman ad on back), 226 Hooper (SGC EX/NM 80, Superman ad on back), 227 Haines (Ex, Superman ad on back), 230 Faber (Gd, Superman ad on back), 232 Goslin (Vg, Superman ad on back), 234 Chance (SGC VG/EX 50, Superman ad on back), 235 McGraw (Vg-Ex, Superman ad on back), 236 Bottomley (SGC VG/EX 50, Superman ad on back), 237 Keeler (Vg-Ex/Ex, Superman ad on back), and 238 Lazzeri (Vg, Superman ad on back). The balance of the cards grade 70% Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt (averaging Ex overall), 20% Vg, and 10% slightly lesser grades. Technically the set falls into the mid-grade category, but has an overall presentation of a much more expensive and higher-grade set. Vintage sets in this grade are especially desirable, representing perhaps the best and least volatile value in the world of vintage cards. The equivalent SMR value for just eleven SGC graded cards (not including the SGC Auth and the 228 ungraded cards) is $2,730. Total 240 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+.
