1888 N173 Goodwin Old Judge Cabinet George Van Haltren
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,644
Graded VG 40 by SGC. 1888 N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet card of George Van Haltren from the Chicago White Stockings (ball in hand pose). Van Haltren was a star player. His career spanned the years from 1887 to 1903, making this N173 one of his earliest cards as a player. Van Haltren's lifetime batting average of .316 makes him one of the best hitters of the nineteenth century. Many baseball scholars consider him to be worthy of induction to the Hall of Fame. The photograph is in Near Mint to Mint condition, with superb contrast. The white writing providing Van Haltren's name, position, and team identification is faintly legible against the very light foreground (this is very common for this issue). The mount has a little spot in the upper right corner and a tiny edge chip on the top, and there is a tiny stain on the reverse in the upper left corner, otherwise the reverse is also essentially perfect. These noted faults are extremely minor and are mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy; the card is otherwise in overall strong Near Mint condition. This is a very attractive N173 Old Judge cabinet sample of one of the era's most highly regarded stars. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,644
