1933 R306 Butter Cream Near-Complete Set (27 of 30)
Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $5,288
Rarely offered near-complete set of R306. Presented is a collection of twenty-seven of the thirty cards which comprise the classic 1933 R306 Butter Cream issue, highlighted by thirteen Hall of Famers. The three cards missing for completion are: Foxx, Grove, and Ruth. The 1933 R306 set produced by Butter Cream is considerably rarer than Goudeys and most other 1930s sets, and has long been recognized by serious collectors as among the most elusive and desirable issues of the era. Ruth is so rare (only three examples are known) that most collectors consider the set complete at just twenty-nine cards. Seven cards (four of which we have selected) have been graded and encapsulated by PSA or SGC. The collection consists of the following: Averill (HOF, Gd-Vg), Brandt (Pr), Bush (Vg-Ex), Cochrane (HOF, Vg-Ex), Cronin (HOF, Ex), Earnshaw (Vg), Ferrell (Pr), Frisch (HOF, paper loss on back, otherwise Vg), Gelbert (Vg), Hartnett (HOF, Vg), Herman (SGC VG/EX 50), Klein (HOF, SGC GOOD 30), Kremer (PSA PR-FR 1 [mk]), Lindstrom (HOF, SGC Authentic due to slight trim along the left edge, otherwise Vg-Ex), Lyons (HOF, Vg), Martin (Gd-Vg), O'Farrell (SGC VG/EX 50), Rommel (Gd-Vg), Root (Vg-Ex), Ruel (Vg-Ex), Simmons (HOF, Gd-Vg), Terry (HOF, PSA Authentic due to slight trim along the top, otherwise Gd-Vg), L. Waner (HOF, miscut on the top and right edge, otherwise Ex), P. Waner (HOF, Gd), Uhle (PSA VG 3), Wilson (HOF, Pr), and Wright (Vg). This is an exceptional and very rarely offered near-complete set of R306 Butter Cream, one of the most popular, elusive, and distinctive 1930s card issues. Charlie Conlon's collecting interests gravitated strongly to rare card issues, and it is not surprising that R306s were among the 1930s sets of great interest to him. A lot of work no doubt was invested in assembling this impressive near-set, which is literally just a few cards short of completion. From the Charlie Conlon Collection. Total 27 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $5,288
