1934 DeLong Gum Company Stock Certificate Book (35 Stock Certificates)
Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $823
Original stock certificate book for the DeLong Gum Company, featuring a total of thirty-five (out of fifty) certificates. DeLong Gum was named after Harold C. DeLong, a former Goudey employee who left to start his own competing gum-card company. DeLong's dreams may have been great, but the DeLong Gum Company managed to put out only a single 24-card set during its short operating existence. Very little, aside from cards, exists relating to DeLong Gum, which makes this stock certificate book all the more unusual, and all the more of an unlikely find. We discovered this stock certificate book in Charlie Conlon's collection. We have no idea where he got it, only that Charlie had a great appreciation for 1930s rarities. There may be a fascinating story regarding the history of this stock certificate book that, at least for now, is lost. Twenty-four of the stock certificates, numbered 27-50, are unissued and remain in their original mint condition, still firmly bound in in the book. Another unissued certificate (number 23), along with its corresponding receipt page (trimmed), has been detached from the book and is otherwise in Mint condition. The remaining ten certificates included here (numbered 4-13), all of which are detached from the book (along the perforation on the left, as intended), are either fully (four examples) or partially (six examples) executed and have been signed by Harold DeLong as both President and Treasurer on the front (the partially executed examples are not filled in on the reverse). Interestingly, all of the detached certificates bear a blue-pencil notation reading "Not Valid" on the front. Furthermore, on six of those certificates both of Harold DeLong's signatures have been crossed out in blue pencil, while on two others one has been crossed out. (The blue-pencil notation and crossing out of the signatures on the certificates was probably part of the process of retiring the shares.) Two of the detached certificates (numbers 5 and 7) have one of the DeLong signatures cut out (the cut segments are present here). Ideally, four of the detached certificates are made out to Harold DeLong, while the others are made out to George Wilson (four certificates) and Conrad Peterson (two certificates). Aside from the two examples that have had one of the two DeLong signatures cut out, the detached certificates are in overall Very Good to Excellent condition. The hard-bound book (15.25 x 8.5 inches) displays moderate wear to the covers and is also in Very Good to Excellent condition. Accompanying the book are three related brokerage receipts recording the purchase of DeLong Gum Co. shares. This is a fascinating relic of gum-card collecting history, directly relating to Goudey and DeLong. Prior to the discovery of this book the only other DeLong Gum Company stock certificate we had ever seen was the one offered in our April 2004 auction (Lot 347). That certificate (number 16, made out to George Wilson), we now know originated long ago from this very book. Reserve $400. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $823
