1935-1937 George Burke Postage Stamp Collection (633)
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,175
Incredible hoard of 633 "Postage Stamp Photos" produced by the famous Chicago photographer George Burke from 1935 to 1937. These are high-quality small real-photo cards that were designed with a stamp-like adhesive on the reverse. This enormous quantity of 630 cards is presented in forty-two uncut perforated sheets of fifteen cards each, as originally issued to individual players for answering fan mail (their intended purpose). Forty-two different players are represented (out of a total 93 known subjects in the set). This massive hoard is highlighted by an incredible 93 Hall of Famers (six different) including sixteen Jimmy Foxx, sixteen Tony Lazzeri, sixteen Chick Hafey, fifteen Jim Bottomley, fifteen Ki Ki Cuyler, and fifteen George Kelly. Three cards are each individually graded by PSA: Jimmy Foxx (PSA NM-MT 8), Chick Hafey (PSA NM-MT 8), and Tony Lazzeri (PSA MINT 9). The sheets are in overall Ex-Mt or better condition, in some cases with just a hint of wear to the corners of the end cards; however, most of the "center cards" of each sheet, including Jimmy Foxx, are in Nr/Mt-Mt or Mint condition. George Burke “Postage Stamp Photos” are a fascinating vintage set which has received virtually no attention from collectors, in part because of the photos' small size and in part because this rare set was issued exclusively to players. This is the only large group from this interesting high-quality 1930s issue we have ever seen. There is quite a lot of duplication in the lot, as that is the nature of the issue. These may have substantial break value, and if it is possible to find others with Burke postage stamps to trade, this collection has plenty of duplicates to work with in attempting to assemble a complete set. Total 633 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,175
