1939 V351 World Wide Gum Joe DiMaggio - SGC NM 84
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,880
Graded NM 84 by SGC. Highest-graded example (with none graded higher) of one of DiMaggio's most striking cards. These Canadian Goudey premiums, issued in 1939, are among the rarest of all 1930s gum issues. Catalogued V351, this set is so rare that most collectors, even 1930s gum-card collectors, are unfamiliar with them. At a glance, this card may appear to be an R303 Goudey premium, but it is not. Although closely related to the American Goudey R303 premium issue, V351 cards are substantially smaller than their American counterparts, measuring only 4 x 5-5/8 inches. Another extremely significant difference is that this card features a completely different image of DiMaggio batting, as opposed to the portrait image that appears on DiMaggio's American R303 Goudey premium. As with R303, each card features playing tips on the reverse. This is one of the two key cards from the set (along with Ted Williams) and one of DiMaggio's rarest cards. The card is bright and crisp, with a flawless surface, no creases, four square corners, and an outstanding image. This is an outstanding and extremely high grade example of a very significant and early DiMaggio rarity. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+. SOLD FOR $1,880
