1887 N173 Goodwin Old Judge Cabinet Dan Brouthers - SGC EX/NM 80

Starting Bid - $1,500, Sold For - $7,638

Graded EX/NM 80 by SGC. Highest-graded example! Stunning ultra high-grade N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet of Hall of Famer Dan Brouthers with Boston posed in front of an elaborate studio backdrop. This is an extraordinary N173 Old Judge in all respects, one of the best N173s we have ever seen, and, by any measure, one of the most impressive of all Dan Brouthers cards. This is also a particularly fascinating card as it was obviously issued very shortly after Brouthers finished the 1888 season with Detroit. Apparently, no photographs of Brouthers in a Boston uniform were yet available when this card was produced, so Goodwin used a photo of Brouthers in his Detroit uniform and had the art department carefully add "Boston" onto his uniform. This is easily seen upon close examination, giving this fascinating card an added dimension of interest and appeal. The image on this card is extraordinarily bold with extremely strong contrast. Very clean, both front and back. Brouthers was a five-time batting champion who led the NL in slugging percentage each of his first six full seasons, and is one of the most prominent of all nineteenth-century Hall of Famers. This is an extraordinary Hall of Famer example from one of the nineteenth century's most revered sets. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000. SOLD FOR $7,638
