Unusual 1934 to 1941 Goudey Card Collection (274)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,819

Very unusual and substantial collection of 274 assorted cards (plus nine wrappers) issued by the Goudey Gum Co. from 1934 to 1941, with representation from eight different issues, in various grades as noted, highlighted by many stars and Hall of Famers, including Jimmie Foxx and Joe DiMaggio. 1) 1934 R309-1 Goudey Premium: American League All-Stars including Ruth and Gehrig (Vg with original easel still attached on the reverse). 2) 1935 R321 Goudey partial set (18 of 36 in the set plus 29 duplicates, 47 total cards): All of the cards in this group, at first glance, present as Excellent condition overall, but upon very close inspection we have determined that many of the cards have been slightly trimmed along one of the edges. This is very subtle, and it was obviously done long ago. Keys (quantities are listed in parentheses): Adams/Bottomley (3), Berry/Vance (3; one is graded SGC EX+ 70), Averill/Trosky (2), Waners (Ex-Mt), Bottomley/Comorsky, Jackson/Terry (4), Bartell/Ott (3), Crowder/Goslin (3), Cochrane/Simmons (5), Blanton/Herman (2), Traynor (2), Bishop/Cronin (2), Hadley/Manush (4), Cochrane/Gehringer (4), Foxx (2), and West (SGC VG/EX 50). 3) 1936 R322 Goudey near-complete set (21 of 25 in the set plus 22 duplicates, 43 total cards): Missing just four cards for completion (Bordagaray, Greenberg, Hemsley, Werber). The near-set of 21 cards grades 20% Vg-Ex to Ex, and 80% Gd to Vg (with a few slightly trimmed). Keys: Cochrane (Gd), Crosetti (Vg/Vg-Ex), Cuyler (Gd), Ferrell (Gd-Vg), Gomez (Vg), Harris (Vg), Klein (Gd-Vg), and Waner (possible slight trim, o/w Ex). The duplicates grade slightly lesser: 70% Gd to Vg, and 30% Pr-Fr. 4) 1936 R314 Goudey "Wide Pens" (116 cards): Type1 (103 cards): seven cards grade Vg, including two DiMaggio/McCarthy and Lombardi; fifteen grade Gd, including DiMaggio/McCarthy, Klein, Lindstrom, and Lombardi; 81 have tack holes on the top and bottom, including Averill, Cochrane, Cuyler, Dickey, two Ferrell Bros., Frisch, Gehringer, Gomez, Goslin, Harris, Lindstrom, and P. Waner. Type 2 (4 cards): Manush (pinholes, o/w Vg), O'Neil (Pr), Solters (pinholes, o/w Vg), and Vosmik (pinhole, o/w Vg). Type 3 (3 cards): Cronin (pinholes, o/w Vg-Ex), Cramer (pinholes, o/w Vg), and Knickerbocker (pinholes, o/w Vg-Ex). Type 4 (6 cards): DiMaggio (Vg), Appling (Gd-Vg), Bonura (Vg), Fletcher (Ex), Moses (Vg), and Murray (Ex). 5) 1937 R325 Goudey Knot Hole League (12 of 24 in the set plus 4 duplicates, 16 total cards): Grade Vg to Vg-Ex (with a few Ex). 6) 1937 R342 Goudey Thum Movies complete set minus one (near-set of 12 plus 11 duplicates, 23 total booklets): Missing just DiMaggio for completion. The near-set of 12 booklets grades Vg-Ex/Ex overall, while the duplicates (two #1, 2, 5, two 6, two 7 Appling, 9, 10 Waner, and 13) grade slightly lesser at Vg to Vg-Ex. 7) 1938 R326 Goudey Big League Baseball Movies partial set (16 of 26 in the set plus six duplicates, 22 total booklets): The partial set of 16 booklets grade Vg to Vg-Ex (with a few slightly lesser). The six duplicates (#1, 5, 7 Appling, two 9, and 10 Waner) are Vg (with a couple slightly lesser). Keys: #3 Ott (part 2, Vg/Vg-Ex), 4 DiMaggio (part 1, Fr and part 2, Vg/Vg-Ex), 8 Feller (part 2, Vg/Vg-Ex), and 12 Foxx (part 2, Vg). 8) 1941 R324 Goudey (7 cards): #5 (Vg), 16 (Vg), 21 Warstler SP (Vg), 22 Sullivan SP (Vg-Ex/Ex), 23 Young SP (Vg), and two 25 Arnovich SP (both Vg). 9) Nine 1933 Goudey Wrappers: All nine are “batter type front - 3 figure” variations. Three grade Vg, five are Gd, and one is Pr. This is a very substantial assortment of quality 1930s Goudey cards and card-related items, with a particularly high concentration of Hall of Famers. Total 274 cards plus 9 wrappers. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500+. SOLD FOR $3,819
