1933 Sport Kings Copyright Cards: Ruth, Cobb, Weissmuller (3)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,938

Presented is a collection of three extremely significant Goudey copyright submission cards of key stars from the 1933 Sport Kings set: #1 Ty Cobb, 2 Babe Ruth, and 21 Johnny Weissmuller. These are the very cards submitted by the Goudey Gum Company for recording and copyrighting purposes to the United States Copyright Office in Washington, D.C. Two examples of each card were required to be submitted to the US Copyright Office by Goudey. One example of each card was returned to Goudey, the other kept by the government for its files (since destroyed). Goudey's original copyright file cards were discovered in The Great Goudey Find of 1969, when Goudey's files were discovered and sold by collector John Fawcett. The copyright cards, which collectors often for convenience refer to as "patent cards," were included in the find and at that time were dispersed to the four corners of the collecting world. Occasionally examples surface, but all can be traced back to files of Goudey and their sale in 1969. While all Goudey copyright cards are of extraordinary historical significance, this is a particularly noteworthy trio, as each is the copyright card of an extremely important Goudey card, which is no doubt related to why they were long ago purchased and how they happened to remain together all these years. Each card has copyright-related ink stampings on reverse. The date stamped on the reverse of the copyright submission cards records that these cards were received in the United States Copyright Office on February 28, 1934. As is often the case with Goudey copyright cards, each has some condition problems, related to their use as well as to the fact that all Goudey copyright cards were handcut from sheets by Goudey. All three are technically low grade, but still very bright, clean, and attractive. Each has been authenticated and encapsulated by PSA. Total 3 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,938
