1933 R319 Goudey Complete Set of 239 (No #106 Lajoie)
Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $16,450
5% Ex (with a couple Ex-Mt), 75% Vg to Vg-Ex, and 20% lesser (a number of cards, including twenty-three graded individually below, have a Vg to Vg-Ex appearance, but which upon very close examination appear to possibly have a very slight trim). There is some serious value to this set represented by just the four Babe Ruth and two Lou Gehrig cards. Five of these six key cards are graded VG 40 or better by SGC (including #181 Ruth which grades EX 60) and one is graded GOOD 30 (Ruth #144). Just the six SGC-graded key cards (four Ruths and two Gehrigs) alone list for $10,600 in the SMR (this figure does not include the other 233 cards in the set). This is a very attractive and consistent set, in an extremely desirable but still relatively affordable grade. The lower-graded cards in the condition composite, in most cases, are cards that have a similar appearance to the rest of the set, but under close examination we think have a very slight trim. The 1933 Goudey set is the first major gum-card set of the 1930s and is universally recognized as the most popular and significant set of the era. Highlighted by four Babe Ruths and two Lou Gehrigs, the set includes all the stars of the 1930s, including an incredible sixty-two Hall of Famers (all of which are graded individually below).
Besides the four Babe Ruth cards and both Lou Gehrig cards, we have also selected an additional eleven cards (for a total of seventeen cards) to be graded and encapsulated by SGC. Keys: #1 Bengough (trimmed), 2 Vance (SGC VG/EX 50), 5 Herman (Gd-Vg), 7 Lyons (Gd), 19 Dickey (Fr), 20 Terry (trimmed), 22 Traynor (Gd), 23 Cuyler (Vg), 25 Waner (possible slight trim), 29 Foxx (SGC VG/EX 50), 31 Lazzeri (Gd), 35 Simmons (Vg-Ex), 42 Collins (Vg), 44 Bottomley (Vg), 47 Manush (Vg), 49 Frisch (Vg), 53 Ruth (SGC VG 40), 56 Ruffing (Vg), 60 Hoyt (SGC VG/EX 50), 63 Cronin (Vg), 64 Grimes (Gd), 73 Haines (possible slight trim), 74 Rixey (Vg), 76 Cochrane (Pr), 79 Faber (Gd), 89 Speaker (slight trim), 92 Gehrig (SGC VG 40), 102 Jackson (Gd), 103 Combs (Vg-Ex), 107 Manush (Vg), 109 Cronin (Gd), 110 Goslin (slight trim), 117 Maranville (SGC VG 40), 119 Hornsby (SGC VG 40), 125 Terry (trimmed), 127 Ott (trimmed), 128 Klein (slight trim), 133 Lindstrom (trimmed), 134 Rice (Gd), 138 Pennock (slight trim), 144 Ruth (SGC GOOD 30), 147 Durocher (Gd), 149 Ruth (SGC VG 40), 154 Foxx (SGC VG 40), 158 Berg (Vg), 160 Gehrig (SGC VG/EX 50), 164 Waner (slight trim), 168 Goslin (SGC Authentic, slight trim), 181 Ruth (SGC EX 60), 187 Manush (Vg), 188 Hornsby (trimmed), 189 Cronin (trimmed), 194 Averill (slight trim), 197 Ferrell (trimmed), 202 Hartnett (trimmed), 207 Ott (SGC GOOD 30), 211 Wilson (trimmed), 216 Gomez (trimmed), 220 Grove (slight trim), 222 Gehringer (SGC GOOD 30), 223 Dean (SGC VG/EX 50), 229 Vaughan (slight trim), 230 Hubbell (Vg), 234 Hubbell (trimmed), and 240 Schumacher (SGC VG/EX 50). In a world where a single high-grade 1933 Goudey key card can sell for more than this entire set, a carefully assembled mid-grade set such as this is rarely offered, and is widely appreciated for the outstanding value it represents. With sixty-two Hall of Famers, including four Ruths and two Gehrigs, this set naturally has a tremendous break value as well. Total 239 cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000+. SOLD FOR $16,450
